We woke up early, before even full light. The side of the road offered nothing interesting so we decided to eat breakfast about 30 minutes north at Mangawhai Heads.
There we sat on a bench and fended off seagulls, watching the unbelievably serene bay. Two fishermen cast lines off to the side as the sun slowly rose over the horizon.
There were boats that would have been lovely to row around the bay, and I briefly thought about swimming. The cold of the morning convinced me otherwise.
As the day warmed and the sun climbed higher we got back on the road towards Waipu Caves.
